Hamas has imposed several restrictions on Gaza residents aimed at increasing observance of its strict interpretation of Islamic law. The terrorist group recently barred women from smoking in public, and said that women's clothing stores may not have dressing rooms and must dress their mannequins modestly.

What a backwards society. It's disgusting.

It sounds like they are becoming as repressive as the Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods, which won't allow women to sit at the front of the bus, won't allow women to smoke, pray in public, pray at the wall with men, and are barred from walking through certain neighborhoods if they are wearing "immodest" clothing. In addition, they are often threatened, beaten, or have had acid thrown at them for wearing such clothing, which can be as innocent as wearing pants.

As for mannequins, did you know that some Orthodox Jewish men complained that having styrofoam heads in shop windows was immodest and that these heads could tempt men? LMAO.

I hate to see the Gazans going down this road - it's backwards and sick. No community that oppresses women has ever come to any good or done any good for the world.

Christian, Muslim and Jewish women have to keep fighting against men that try to oppress them in the name of religion.

Bonos Rama, I agree with you that extreme orthodox jews are just as bad. Like you said, any community that oppresses women is a backwards community... I do think there is a difference though between the orthodox jews (which are a minority) and Hamas (which is their actual GOVERNMENT and makes the LAW!)

I pity those Palestinian women who have nowhere to go. A Jewish Orthodox woman who want to leave, run away, etc. can easily find dozens of help centers which will rehabilitate her. Those Palestinian women, however, either get thrown in jail or get murdered... It's horrible.

bonos, dude you are waaaay off you have no clue what your talking about. And if you are comparing Islamic extremism to Jewish Orthodox in terms of repressiveness Jewish orthodox is a choice woman are free to do what they want in Israel, can't say the same for Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Palestine. None of the things you described are true. Israel has had women Prime Ministers, Defense Ministers and almost every other level of government, can't say the same for most Muslim nations, i.e. Pakistan killed their Woman Presidential candidate with a huge bomb that killed many innocent people. You can NOT deny that extreme Islamic Nations with their extreme Islamic laws aren't repressive to not just women but to human rights period!!! Dude get a clue before you post utter ignorance!!

They need to nip that in the bud in Israel because Orthodox jews are becoming just as bad as muslim extremists. There is no way I would visit Israel because of the way women are being treated there lately. I have a daughter, and because of that, I cannot tolerate nations that oppress women and I refuse to visit them.

Bernard, Orthodox Jews may oppress women, but the nation of Israel does not. It's not fair to blame a whole country for the action of a minority! Israel is one of the least sexist countries in the entire world... I always smile a little when in Israel men won't even open a door for me lol. And that's great. I love it. I am not a fragile little thing that needs to have a door opened for her or her meal payed for. So you should really do some research!

Wrong; the ultra-orthodox Rabbis in Israel make the laws.

In fact, many Jewish people from the U.S. and elsewhere are growing tired of the oppression by ultra-orthodox Jews who are now trying to say who is and who isn't Jewish. According to their "laws", many Jews of the diaspora are no longer considered "Jewish" enough.

And if Israel is "not oppressive"as you say, why did they allow women to be told to sit at the back of the bus? Read up on mehadrin (segregated) buses. Why isn't anything done about the men that threaten women for walking on "men's sidewalks"? Why isn't anything done about men who threaten and beat women for dressing immodestly?

Just recently, a rabbi got violent with some young girls who were riding in go-karts. He tore them out of the karts and smashed the karts. The police refused to do anything:

Sorry, but the Taliban HAS come to israel and it's because people refuse to speak out.

Bonos, you have to make a distinction between Israeli law and Jewish law: it is not the same thing. Rabbis most definitely make the laws when it comes to judaism and who is jewish and who is not... But you are wrong in assuming that Rabbis make the laws in Israel. Israel is a democracy and has a separation of powers just like the united states. No Rabbi could change the law, impossible. You should read up a bit on the Israeli government so as to have an idea about how it works. Certain Rabbis might have a lot of influence, but then again, so do many priests in the States?

As for the mehadrin buses... As despicable as you and I may think they are, they are PRIVATE buses funded by religious groups. If they want men to sit in the front and women in the back, it is their right. Much like it is my right to decide who sits where in my car.

As for your link, the facility was a private one owned and used by a religious group. You cannot blame a whole country for a few bad seeds and you know it.

no, the mehadrin buses are NOT private. These are the publicly-funded (taxpayers) Egged lines. In other words, women in israel pay taxes for t hose buses and then are forced to the back.

Here is an article by an Israeli woman:

        http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3934248,00.html

        Excerpt:

We already saw women being pushed to the backs of buses (an ongoing affair despite the High Court's ruling on the case,) women confined to one side of the streets in Jerusalem's haredi neighborhoods, and the humiliation of Mizrahi girls in Emmanuel. Earlier this week, we were told about the violent removal of girls from a go-karting facility at the same community.

At the end of this process we can expect to have a state managed by haredi men who discriminate against and humiliate women.

We've become accustomed to taking for granted political parties who disqualify women from taking office. These parties are nonetheless allowed to run in the elections, join governments, and lead the country despite their discriminatory conduct. The women she is talking about are Religious Orthodox women. These women have the choice to get up and leave if they want to. The organizations she is talking about are such as Shass, a religious political organization in the government. Guess who voted for them? Yep, both men and women... But again, they are a minority. They do not make laws.

And by the way, no woman is forced to the back. These buses are very few and usually exist only in ultra-orthodox neighborhoods. Women that choose to get on those buses do so because they, themselves, believe they should be separated from the men.

Hamas is not the only group seeking to enforce Islam in Gaza. In recent years it has been challenged by Jaish al-Islam (Army of Islam), a group whose former leader, Abu Mustafa, accused Hamas of being “Islamic-lite.”

These guys make Hamas look like a group of puppies...

Right here in the U.S. there are people who believe witchcraft is wrong and vilify people who believe. Sarah Palin has a religious adviser who fights withcraft in Africa and is responsible for killings and beatings.

I'm sorry to say, but in my opinion, witchcraft is just another religion! Plain and simple! In fact, isn't it called Wicca?

However, the article says NOTHING about the murderers. Who were they, is anyone even looking for them?
